Young skaters should dress like they’re going to go play in the snow~ snowpants, warm jacket and mittens.
Other participants might find it more beneficial to wear warm, easy to move in, athletic clothing and gloves or mittens.
All skaters should wear a helmet! A bike or other type of helmet is fine~ just make sure the helmet fits the skater well, and that it covers the skater’s forehead. Skaters usually become more stable on their feet by Basic 4 or 5 so skaters can consider not using a helmet by then.
-
All skaters must provide their own skates for classes! We do not provide rental skates. We do have skates for sale on our Re-Sale page!
It is highly recommended for beginner skaters to wear a leather figure skate to start skating! The blade is flatter so it helps kids balance sooner! Then it’s easier to transition to a hockey skate when the skater can stop, skate backwards & balance on one foot!
Skaters can wear whatever skate they choose to class, and when you are looking for a good pair of skates make sure the blade has no rust, the ankles are supportive, and that they are single blade skates!
There is a lot more info on skates, where to buy them and what to look for in good skates in our Resource page in our My Studio app!

Please do the following when you arrive for skating classes!
-Use the Class Calendar to pre-register for your class time.
-Arrive about 15 minutes prior to your class starting!
-Have the skater use the restroom if they need it.
-Go to the front table by the rink we are skating in that day.
-Move your attendance & progress card from the black box to the clear box so we know you are here!
-Take a time sticker from the box so we know what time your skater wants to do class.
-Find your nametag in the pocket chart. Put the time sticker on it.
-Follow the signs & go to the locker rooms to put your skates on!
-If you are early to class, you can go practice in the end, or wait by the doors (one door will be for the red classes & one door is for the other classes) until it is your class time.
-When it’s time for class, please go the sign with your class color on it! You will know what color class you are in because there is a sticker on the back of your nametag that is the proper color plus the type of class you are in on the front of your nametag is also written in your class color.
-Listen to your instructor, be safe, learn a lot & have lots of fun in class!
-After class, please put your nametag back into it’s spot in the pocket chart!
-
All skaters actively enrolled in classes are welcome to practice in the practice end!

-
This is where our program is unique, and skaters can use our program to progress as quickly as they’d like or at their own pace!
On your attendance card, every fourth class is marked off in red. When you turn in your card and notice that you are coming on the 4th, 8th, 12th or 16th class, please turn your card in to the clear bin that is labeled with the time of your class, and then we will evaluate any skater who’s card is turned in that day!
After we evaluate you, we will return the bin to the front table so skaters can see their results. If you earned a badge that day, it will be attached to your card!

We have rules that we ask all participants & families abide by to help ensure everyone is safe on the ice:
*All spectators should sit in the bleachers (not the hockey boxes) during class.
*Only skate school staff is allowed in the hockey boxes.
*Please do not crowd the doorways so skaters can get on & off the ice quickly.
*No shoes on the ice.
*No gum or food on the ice.
*Skaters unstable on their feet should wear helmets.
*Skaters should stay in the practice end until it’s time for their lesson.
*If you are late to class and cannot skate to class yourself, please wait patiently by the doorway until a staff member can get you. Parents cannot walk their skater to class on the ice with their shoe on. Otherwise, skaters should skate to class on their own (just find your color).
PRACTICE END RULES
*No sticks or other objects
*Only skate school participants & parents with a parent pass or enrolled in classes in the practice end.
*Skate at safe speeds!
*Stay on your feet in the practice end & play nicely with your friends.
*Skaters not able to follow the rules will only be warned once, and then they will be asked to sit out of practicing that day.

Inclement Weather~ if there is inclement weather, assume we are still having skating classes. We only do not have classes unless the VMCC itself closes. Remember, you can always re-schedule a class if you do not want to come in, and we are are still having classes.
Skate School Cancellations~If there is ever an emergency, and we can’t have classes (i.e. a power outgage), we will email families ASAP! You will not be refunded for a class~ just re-schedule it!
Refunds~ Because of our flexible class schedule, we do not refund families for missed classes or if someone signs up for skating classes & then realizes it doesn’t work for them. We do not do refunds except for extenuating circumstances and that is purely at the director’s discretion.
Class Sizes~ if classes are small, we will merge them together. All coaches are trained in teaching multiple levels at once, and the LTS USA curriculum was designed so that lower level skills build into higher level ones so it is easy to teach multiple levels at once, and it helps introduce new skills to skaters.
Space in Class- Because skaters can pick and choose what classes they want, we generally do not fill up. That’s why we use the Class Calendar! The spot you are giving up someone else can have! In the event of a full class, skaters pre-registered for the class only have spots for that class (you can’t just show up to get a spot if the class is full and no one cancels).
Changing Levels- the Skating Director or On Ice Coordinator has the discretion to move skaters around to the most appropriate class as they see fit. We do this so skater’s can feel successful on the ice, or be challenged if class is too easy or if the skater needs to move up before the evaluation rolls around.
-
All skaters that step foot on our ice time must have some sort of skating insurance! This is mandatory with our insurance and just in general in the skating world.
As of Nov 15, 2024, if you enroll in Skate School classes with us, we will automatically purchase the insurance for you through Learn to Skate USA. A charge of $18.50 will come through on your card through learntoskateusa.com
Each skater must have their own individual insurance. No one can share.
If you already have a USA Hockey, ISI or US Figure Skating membership, please email us a copy of your current membership within 24 hrs of registering for classes so we do not charge $18.50 to your card. USA Hockey, US Figure Skating & ISI memberships also meet our insurance mandates (they’re just more expensive).
-
We do have a variety of scholarships available! Please check out our Scholarship page to see if any fit your skater!
-
Parents are allowed on the ice in the following ways:
-They are enrolled in the Parent & Me Class with their skater.
-The parents is enrolled in Adult skating classes.
-The parents has filled out the Parent Pass form and has a current Learn to Skate USA membership or equivalent.
-
In general, these levels are pretty interchangeable. Ice Explorers are meant for skaters ages 2-3 years old or kids who need a slower time getting used to the ice. If your skater signs up for SS 1, but we evaluate them for Ice Explorers, don’t freak out! It is just because we are trying to be encouraging, we want to give your skater a badge, and we want your skater to enjoy ice skating! We will evaluate them for SS 1 the next time they are tested.
Snowplow Sam 1 is meant for skaters who are ages 3-6 years old and can move around the ice sooner than a little two year old.
A lot with these levels just depends upon where a skater is at in their physical and mental development. All little kids develop uniquely so it’s more important that kids are enjoying skating and are improving than what level they are at!
-
This depends upon the skater, and their development, but most levels take about 8 classes to pass, especially Snowplow Sam 1 & 2 and also Basic 1, 2, and 3!
Snowplow Sam 3 & 4, Basic 4, 5 and 6 and Hockey and Figure Skating classes all take longer than 8 classes to pass, but that is because these skills are harder so they just simply take more time to learn. And that is okay! We want skaters to learn high quality basic skills so they can continue to progress in skating without backtracking!
What is Skate School & Who Can Take Classes?
Skate school is group classes where skaters learn how to ice skate! These classes teach the basics and some advanced skills in ice skating and give skaters the foundations for figure skating, hockey or speed skating! It also teaches skaters to be safe and confident on the ice at a reasonable cost so people new to ice skating can try it out! Classes are fun, progress in levels and skating is a life sport! Sometimes “Skate School” is called Learn to Skate.
We offer classes for skaters ages 2 through adult! There are classes for the whole family!
The Mission of Our Skate School
We proudly partner with Learn to Skate USA! It is recognized as the world’s best ice skating program and is endorsed by USA Hockey, US Figure Skating and US Speed Skating. Our Skate School mission is the same as Learn to Skate USA’s: to provide a fun and positive experience that will instill a lifelong love of skating.
Curriculum
Our curriculum for Skate School follow the Learn to Skate USA curriculum! Click the buttons below to see the detailed list of skills for each set of type of class.
Because our skate school runs all year long, skaters are evaluated to see if they pass into the next level every fourth class they attend! Skaters may be moved up at any time though, so that they stay excited and challenged on the ice!
Features of Our Skate School
Our classes run ALL YEAR LONG! You can make a lot of progress in one year! Skaters can join anytime!
Because classes run all year, we use an online class calendar to provide FLEXIBLE SCHEDULING for families. Families can book as many classes as they want, re-schedule or cancel classes. You never lose out on a class!
Classes are 30 min long and skaters can also practice in the PRACTICE END of the ice when they aren’t in class during Skate School time~ that is free extra skating time!
We have classes for the WHOLE FAMILY! Kids and parents can take class at similar times or oftentimes sibling can be in different classes at the same time!
Our COACHES are HIGHLY QUALIFIED! All coaches have their certification in Learn to Skate USA, are background checked and have completed Safesport training. Coaches are given continuous training on skate school techniques throughout the year and are high achieving skaters themselves. Most of our coaches have received gold medals in some aspect of skating! Even our high level coaches enjoy working with grassroots level skaters!
